On September 19th, The Duke will host a special golf day for Golfers Against Brain Cancer (GAB). There are still a few spots left!
Every year, eight members of The Duke organize a business-to-business golf day for entrepreneurs and their business associates. This year, they are making 10 of their flights available to GAB, an initiative of Redline Golf to raise money through golf for research into immunotherapy for brain cancer. All proceeds from this day will go to UMC Utrecht.
The founders and owners of Redline Golf, and initiators of GAB, Yolanda Bros and David Verburg, explain on the Redline website why they founded Golfers Against Brain Cancer.
"In November 2024, our daughter Ghislaine (25) was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, a diffuse astrocytoma grade II to be precise. This is the most common brain tumor among young adults (ages 18 to 40, approximately 50,000 people worldwide annually). It is an incurable, slow-growing cancer that unfortunately cannot (yet) be completely removed and can mutate into a fast-growing type over time." During our search for information about treatment methods, we came across a new type of therapy called immunotherapy: more specifically, CAR-T cell therapy. This treatment method trains and adapts (the body's own) immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. The goal is to enable the immune system to respond specifically to tumor cells, while sparing healthy cells as much as possible. In blood cancers, this has led to complete recovery in some patients, a breakthrough in cancer research. While this is new for brain cancer, promising results have been achieved in the first clinical trials. By supporting research to apply this therapy to brain cancer as well, we hope to pave the way to completely destroy cancer cells. Brain cancer, and other cancers as well, must be cured in the future.
Golfers Against Brain Cancer: All Proceeds to UMC Utrecht In October 2011, we founded the online golf brand Redline Golf, a wonderful company that has since been introduced to tens of thousands of golfers. This year and in the coming years, we will be committed to raising money for this research through the golf community worldwide. This is achieved through the sale of golf equipment, the organization of golf tournaments, and innovative initiatives. We call this project GAB.©: Golfers Against Brain Cancer. All proceeds go to the UMC Utrecht and Niels Bovenschen's research project: https://hersenen.actievoorumcutrecht-wkz.nl/project/gab
